It's not rocket science.  Google progressive prohibition.

If I'm defending my position, isn't that the point.

No not really If you're discussing the prohibition movement in the US and you then limit your search to "progressive prohibition" you are deliberately elimination any other groups (no matter how large or small) that were involved in the movement.

My own searches show that the Progressive prohibition movement was vastly dwarfed by the religious based temperance movements

My original knowledge on the subject was as a result of a History channel program a while back (years).  I believe it was on Woodrow Wilson.  They brought up the fact about progressives pushing through prohibition.

BTW, these progressives and religious based movements I believe are largely one in the same.

The simple expedient of Googling <prohibition causes> reveals many scholarly works on the subject.

Did I miss the memo where a time machine brought us all back to a time before government took any interest in the safety of our food and drugs?

You mean like in the 1920s when they banned the sale of the drug "alcohol" for the good of the people?  After all, no one needs that dangerous additive in their scotch or vodka.

From the article linked in the OP:

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, as it is called, stops short of empowering the F.D.A. to outlaw smoking or ban nicotine

Sure, and if some right-winger suggested that kind of slippery slope about any other Obama administration policy you would be one of the first to dismiss it.

It depends on what it is.

And this is not a partisan issue.  I lived for years in a red state that continually worked to chip away at tobacco.  It was taxed more, regulated more, etc.

This is a nationwide trend and it is getting insane.

Slippery slopes or not, and regardless of the mix of political ideologies involved in pushing for Prohibition, it is indisputable that the pressure for the most draconian, restrictive and intrusive anti-smoking fanaticism comes almost exclusively from the political left.

And of course, the way you have phrased that makes it impossible to dispute because its meaning is completely subjective and the goalposts are moveable at will.
