I recall a lot of red, as well as blue, states that jumped on the "sue the tobacco companies" bandwagon and gladly took those spoils.

That's actually a separate issue...
How many localities run by conservatives do you know of that have passed ordinances against renters being able to smoke in their apartments, or prohibitions against smoking in your car? How many conservative activist organizations do you know of that are constantly pressing for ever more restrictive and intrusive anti-smoking legislation?

I'm not sure of localities/municiplaities and who runs them, but I do know a lot of companies (large ones that are run by arch conservatives) that have exceeded the law banning smoking in th workplace and extended it to the parking lots and in employees' cars.
edited to add: When NYC enacted a sweeping smoking ban on all public and workplaces, I believe a "conservative" republican, either Giuliani or his chosen successor Bloomberg, was in power. And in the strong mayor system of NYC, the mayor has a lot of power.

[Lord Jim]Slippery slopes or not, and regardless of the mix of political ideologies involved in pushing for Prohibition, it is indisputable that the pressure for the most draconian, restrictive and intrusive anti-smoking fanaticism comes almost exclusively from the political left.
To wit:
With the exception of Montana, I would assume these states to be "progressive" in their stances on tobaccoo.
Quote
Statewide bans on smoking in all general public places
As of May 2009, 25 states have enacted statewide bans on smoking in all enclosed public places, including bars and restaurants: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana
The anti-progressives......

States with no statewide smoking ban
As of May 2009, 13 states have not enacted any general statewide ban on smoking in any non-government-owned spaces: Alabama, Alaska, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Instead, laws in most of these states (see individual state listings below for further information) require proprietors of certain places to designate smoking and non-smoking areas and post signage. In Oklahoma, state law prohibits local governments from regulating smoking more strictly than the state, making it the only state without any kinds of legislated smoking bans. In Michigan, per a 2001 court decision, local governments have no power to ban smoking in restaurants and bars.[5] In all the other eleven states, some cities and/or counties have enacted local smoking bans to varying degrees, and in Michigan some cities and counties have enacted local smoking bans excluding bars and restaurants.

I was there when the AZ ban went into place. The Repubbies were just as much for it as anyone else. Especially since they controlled (still do) the state.
Just another sin to bash on...

Colorado. Iowa. The political left? Please.
And you "forgot" these:
Quote
Nebraska
, New Jersey,
New Mexico
, New York,
Ohio
, Oregon, Rhode Island,
South Dakota
(effective July 1, 2009),
Utah
, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin (effective July 5, 2010).
And you also "neglected" to mention the individual cities in other states, like Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Texas, etc. that have complete public space indoor bans.

someone is not sharing their sources.
Oh hey, no problem, I found
liberty1's
source pretty easily:
Quote
Written for my American History 2 Class in College (AMH 1020):
“Did Prohibition achieve Progressive goals?”
http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/841882
Judging from the citations, it looks like the author read about 50 pages in exactly one source book. And even so, virtually all of his conclusory assertions about the philosophy and goals of Progressivism -- particularly with respect to alcohol -- are unattributed (and evidently the imaginings of the writer). Not exactly a model of scholarship here.
And by the way, those raving liberals Ford and Rockefeller were big promoters of Prohibition, largely on grounds that alcohol interfered with the productivity of workers (although as I recall, Rockefeller's support was spurred by his wife's ardor for the cause).

I think NY state and definately NY city are in there also.
maybe I missed where someone mentioned it
. Doesn't matter rep or dem, smokers are marked men. Suffolk and Nassau county are trying to get another $2 a pack tax added on. A pack of cigarettes is already almost $8.
